Integration of Roma People into Society
Members: Veronica, Ramona, Mihai, Larry, Cosmin

Our project aims to attempt to work together with Roma community in our society as alias in their efforts to win equal rights in society and equal value of a space for their traditions.
First we are going to find some partners (especially organizations that deal with Roma people) and then establish together the objectives, the methodology in order to obtain the results we all expect.

comments and questions from the audience during the presentation

- Development of the idea asks for a lot of people and money, but don't give up the idea

- Why did you move from Roma student partners to a bigger groups of partners? The former proposal was more concrete.

- To me it seems that you have a 3-step model:
(1) you offer something to "them", education, jobs and so on. (2) "they" have to accept the offer. (3) Then integration starts, society will become better. This is somewhat funny. Why in your model, does Romanian society not have to reflect what they gain from the exclusion (economically, politically, morally?) Why not try to understand exclusion as a complex process that has many aspects? Why not ask Roma people, different Roma people, how they experience exclusion and what reasons they do see? And then together work against inclusion?

- nothing concrete, be more active!!!, too slow!

- Very good presentation and research, but try to include their wishes and way of their living more. Wish you luck!

- I found it problematic when you say that the Roma are "good negotiators" or "good musicians". Those sounds like stereotypes.

- The last of your point on "encouraging education" should also be the outcome of discussion with the partners
- Interesting idea of co-creating a methodology with your partners, but how can you know the objectives before the conversations happened?
- Are the four groups of Roma self-defined or are others grouping them?

- It is nice to see such personal interest in solving the social problem from your local community. I which you a lot of luck with your future project.

- 1. Difference between integration and assimilation?
- 2. What is done in Romania for Roma people? What is the opinion of the government?
- 3. Tell us more about organizations which are helping Roma people in Romania?

- Very good presentation!!!

- nice music!

- They were using stereotypes to the Roman people in a case where the main theme was how to erase the stereotype for the Roman people.

- What do you think about who is going to be the most benefitor; Roma people or the offers, after your project?

- How much time (decades, years) do you think will take the integration? I sit possible to eliminate it?

- Do Romas want to integrate? How would you motivate them?

- Is it possible to connect rich and poor groups of Roma to help?

- Interesting way of presentation

- Where does it come from this term: "minority"? Which country? Which university? Which debate?
- Who were the first authors to use it? What was their thesis? How do you justify the need of using this term?
- What are the impact of the spread of this term on the political actions?

- The same questions with the term "inclusion/ exclusion" "ethnicity", "ethnie" ...

- Where does it come from this term: "Public opinion" Which country? Which debate?

- Who were the first authors to use it? How do they justify the use of this term? How the "public opinion" os measured? In which context is used this term? To justify what? for the interest of who? using this term in mass medias, what are the impacts on the practice of election within participative democracy.

- The presentation should be more dynamic.

- interesting presentation

- good way of presenting
- good introduction
- you were using also stereotypes Roma people are good musicioans, good negotiators, :)
- The solution were just mentioned - you should have emphasis on the actions specifically.

- What kind of difficulties you expect to encounter as you try to cooperate with Roma? And how are you going to cope with them?

- How will you work with your own stereotypes?

- Questions at the end seem like the project itself.

- How do you know objectives before speaking?
- Where did the question of assimilation and integration go? What is the meaning of integration?

- How are you going to convince Roma parents that education is favourable for their children?

- At the end: Who is your constituency: Roma communityy in Craiova or organizations dealing with Roma? How did you come up with the "4 types" of Roma pple?

thoughts and ideas for your work from here...

Great job putting these ideas together. You really did well explaining how you consider your proposal to the Roma community only a "possible" way of going about this work if members of this constituency were to agree. You asked very thorough questions for yourselves to consider and showed more mature praxis in the research & intervention process. To help you continue to strengthen your approach, consider these questions and thoughts:

I have the feeling you often added the word "Possible" in some cases, but still want to apply these methods with or without the constituency's participation or permission. Is this integration, or something coming only from the privileged group without the process of co-creation really in place? Do you think you would approach the Roma community without showing them your whole plan? Or do you think you will give them a full presentation the way you gave YOI? Do you think it might insult them or overwhelm them to see you have been thinking and working so much without them?

You ask about sensitivities you may need to understand before moving forward. Do you think one sensitivity might be to withhold your plans and process completely until you have co-developed it with the Roma constituency? If there are several communities of Roma people in Romania, how will you access each of them in the co-creation of your research & intervention process?

Most importantly, what will you do if you present your proposal and it is rejected by the constituency? Do you think it might be wise to eliminate any methods or ideas until the constituency has really informed you well of their needs, desires, hopes, dreams, realities, etc...?

Do you know what the term "dysfunctional rescuing" means? Can you research it and see how your research results of this term could affect your process so far?

In the beginning, you say the Roma people would be working with you, not that you would be working with them. So, are the Roma people the object of this endeavor, or the subject? What is the difference? What is the difference between

Is it ever ok to believe in a stereotype that generalizes all the individuals associated with an entire group? Is it ever ethical to base public policies on a stereotypes applied to whole groups of people?

You said yourselves there are many stereotypes of the Roma people, as a people, and you then also claim some of these stereotypes, like "Roma are good negotiators and musicians." Are these sterotypes? Do the 4 Roma communities you describe identify themselves this way or, are the categorization of the 4 types of Roma communities stereotypical? What other social barriers to equality exist? How are you also carrying the implanted barriers to social equality within you? What steps can you take to learn about your own perpetuation of these barriers before acting for equality as allies of the Roma people in your communities or country?

Who benefits from stereotypes you call positive, like "good negotiators." Is there such a thing as a good stereotype applied to a whole group of people? Isn't there a logical end to this line of reasoning, for example, that Roma people are good negotiators, the implication is then that they are cheap or able tog ain at the expense of others. Nazi Germans also had this perception of Jews and Gypsies. They blamed them for their economic problems and mobilized their society and others' to implement the Final Solution to this "problem." Their victims were considered "good negotiators." How can you address the way in which you use the

You say half of the Roma people have no documents. Can you site this as a documented fact from a valid source?

What is the clear difference in definition between assimilation and integration? Please explain. How is your work going to differ in these ways?

some thoughts...

I think point 4 and 5 of your project objectives are amazing. i would focus on those, they are already huge tasks!

The problems you identify are great too, i am sure you could expand this list if you spent some time talking to roma.

i would only organize events with them not for them.

your questions at the end are great, would be good to discuss in a round table as a starting point when you meet with your allies. i am sure they will trigger a lot of interesting discussions and ideas.

i would suggest working with one group of roma to start your intervention. and i would try to keep your work as specific as possible and avoid big generalizations or trying to be really broad in answering some of your questions.

i really hope you keep this up! would be really really great to see you working on this when you are back home since you are all from the same team/town.

good luck
